Lesslie Newbigin – Bishop of Madras

Lesslie Newbigin, born in England and ordained by the Church of Scotland in 1936, embarked on a transformative journey as a missionary in India. His profound impact on Christian theology and missionary work unfolded over a remarkable life spanning 88 years.

In 1936, Newbigin began his missionary service in Kanchipuram, India, under the Church of Scotland. His fluency in Tamil and pivotal role in the formation of the Church of South India (CSI) in 1947 marked the beginning of a lasting connection with the country. Serving as one of the first bishops of the CSI from 1947 to 1959, he played a crucial role in bringing together Anglicans, Presbyterians, Methodists, and Congregationalists within the church.

Newbigin’s engagement with global Christianity deepened in 1948 when he represented the CSI at the founding assembly of the World Council of Churches (WCC) in Amsterdam. He continued to contribute significantly to the WCC, drafting key documents and organizing theological input for assemblies. His leadership in the International Missionary Council and subsequent integration with the WCC in 1961 showcased his diplomatic skills and intellectual acumen.

Returning to South India as the Bishop of Madras in 1965, Newbigin continued his involvement with the WCC, particularly focusing on Faith and Order. In 1974, he retired and returned to Britain, affiliating with the United Reformed Church. Despite being recognized as an assistant bishop in the Church of England, he chose the tradition of his upbringing.

Newbigin’s later years saw a shift toward public theology, urging Western Christians to rediscover the gospel as public truth in a pluralistic society. He joined Selly Oak College in 1974, emphasizing the need for a genuine missionary encounter between Christ and the secular West.

His impact extended beyond geographical and cultural boundaries, shaping the emergent and missional church movements. Newbigin’s global ministry, born out of an unlikely background and initiated at the age of 66, left an indelible mark on theology. Influenced by his years in India, he championed local leadership and rejected colonial attitudes, emphasizing the enrichment gained through shared cross-cultural experiences.

Bishop Lesslie Newbigin’s life, characterized by hope, humility, and hard work, concluded with his passing on January 30 at the age of 88. From his early days as a missionary in India to his influential role in global Christianity, Newbigin’s legacy continues to inspire and shape the dialogue between faith and the diverse contexts of the modern world.
